Black Friday Week is officially underway at Amazon.com. Many people this year are looking for hot deals on the Kindle for 2011 Black Friday Week, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. How do you find these deals as they occur?
Black Friday, Cyber Monday Kindle Deals and the Gold Box “Today’s Deal” Icon
The place to look for Kindle Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals is going to be in the “Today’s Deals” section found on Amazon.com’s home page. There is a gold treasure chest located at the top of the page. Click to visit now.
Within this section there are a lot of deals that can be had, from video games, to tennis shoes, and everything in between. It’s been rumored that 2011 could be a year that Amazon gives gold box deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday for the Kindle, at least for a few hours.
Which Kindle Models Get the Deep Black Friday and Cyber Monday Discount? Kindle Fire? Kindle Touch? Or Earlier Models?
Since the Kindle Fire is finally being released to pre-orderers as we speak, it could be argued that there won’t be a deal there. Of course, it’s already been reported that Amazon is losing money on the production and sale of the Kindle Fire, so what’s losing another few dollars to gain more customers this week? The more important question could be if whether or not Amazon would alienate a lot of pre-order shoppers by offering a deep discount on the Kindle Fire.
The Kindle Touch could also be a Black Friday and Cyber Monday deal this 2011 shopping season, however for the same reasons above, it could be a risky thing to offer for Amazon.
The most likely candidate and deal will be the Kindle With Keyboard. This is the oldest model undoubtedly wearing out their welcome in Amazon warehouses across the nation and need to be liquidated. Last year Amazon offered the Kindle 2 for $89 on Black Friday. This year is a very similar scenario with the Kindle With Keyboard.
No matter which Kindle deal rears it’s head this 2011 Black Friday Week, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, be rest assured it will be a popular thing. So be quick on the mouse!

Barnes and Noble has announced it’s newest full color ebook reader tablet device, dubbed the Nook Tablet. Undoubtedly an attempt to extinguish the Kindle Fire this 2011 Holiday Season, the Nook Tablet has some interesting and competitive features. Which is the better value, though? Let’s compare the Kindle Fire vs Nook Tablet and see which new tablet reader comes out on top.
Device Memory Capacities- A big difference between the Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire are the ways that they approach and handle memory. The Nook Tablet comes with 16 GB standard. Just like all Nook models, the Tablet comes with the option to insert an SD card to expand memory. So in effect, the Tablet can be converted into a 32 GB memory device.
The Kindle Fire, on the other hand, comes with 8 GB standard on the device. In order to store more content than 8 gigs, one must use the Amazon Cloud Drive. As a Kindle owner, all your Amazon content can be stored on the Cloud for free. Additionally, Amazon offers the first 5 GB on the Cloud for free to anyone, after that you basically pay $1/year per 1 GB of space ($20/year for 20 GB, $50/year for 50 GB, etc…), which is still very reasonable if you want to store your other computer files on the Cloud. This does mean that in order to access content on the Cloud you need to be connected to the internet, however downloading files from the Amazon Cloud is very easy and once you download what you want it is on your Kindle Fire until you remove it to free up space.
Which is better? It depends on the user, of course, and preference on where the content is stored, online or on the device.
Processing Speed- Both the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet have the exact same processor, the TI OMAP 4 Dual Core 1 GHz processor.
RAM- The RAM of the Kindle Fire is 512 MB. For the Nook Tablet it’s 1 GB. It should be noted that one cannot make a claim on speed of the device just by looking at RAM. Many factors are at work, like the software of the device for one. It will be a little more clear the difference in speed of the two once both are delivered in mid-November.
Dimensions and Weight-
Nook Tablet- 14.1 ounces. Dimensions measure at 5″ x 8.1″ x .48″
Kindle Fire- 14.6 ounces. Dimensions measure at 4.7″ x 7.5″ x .45″
Battery Life- The Nook Tablet will allow up to 11.5 hours of usage on one charge with the wireless off. While the Kindle Fire allows for up to 8 hours.
Display Screens- Both Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire have a 7″ IPS display with 1024 x 600 resolution- 169 pixels per square inch.
No 3G for either, both devices work only on Wi-Fi.
Now that we have looked at the technical differences, let’s talk about the fun stuff, which is what makes one device more appealing than the other for most people- Features.
Apps:
The Nook Tablet comes with a few standard apps pre-loaded on the device like Pandora Internet Radio, Hulu Plus, and NetFlix. There are thousands (about 1,110) of additional apps to be added to the Nook App Store, which is a special B&N App Store.
The Kindle Fire on the other hand comes with access to the Amazon App Store Android which has already reached 17,00 apps.
Books:
Of course, you can buy books from B&N and Amazon for each respective device. You can also borrow library books from local libraries on both devices, thanks to recently released Kindle Library program. Another new way is through the Amazon Prime For Kindle Owners Lending Program, which allows Kindle owners taking advantage of a number of benefits if they sign up for Amazon Prime. These benefits include free ebook borrowing from Amazon, up to one title per month from the Amazon ebook store. Also, there is access to millions of TV shows and movies with the addition of this $79 per year service by the Kindle Fire owner.
Movies, Etc.:
The Nook Tablet allows you to watch HD movies, TV shows from the usual suspects – Netflix and Hulu Plus (free trials). You can also listen to music from Pandora in addition to your own tunes with the built-in music player. You also get free trials of Rhapsody, MOG and Grooveshark.
The Kindle Fire gives you access to 100,000 Movies and TV Shows available to stream, download, purchase or rent. Once again, Amazon Prime members enjoy unlimited, commercial-free streaming of over 10,000 popular movies and TV shows. You can also listen to your Music Library, either streaming from the Cloud or download and listen on your device when offline.
Docs and Email:
Both devices promise lightning fast email and web access. And, of course, you can store and view your documents (most popular document extensions supported) on both.
Unique Features:
Amazon’s Silk Browser on the Kindle Fire. An ultra-fast mobile browsing experience on the device with the new “Silk” browser, which has increased page load times because it uses the Amazon Cloud service.
Nook Tablet Microphone built in microphone for this Nook, which is not part of the Amazon device.
Last but not least, the final decision maker, PRICING:
Kindle Fire vs. Nook Tablet- Which Wins?
It’s all going to come down to the shoppers needs. Here are some considerations to take into account.
The Nook Tablet has more RAM (1 GB vs 512 MB), bigger storage capacity (16 GB vs 8 GB), but a higher price point – $50 more than the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire has access to many more apps and the Amazon Cloud Drive with unlimited storage. Another considerable difference that affects all Nook and Kindle devices is International access. If you plan to travel outside of the US with your device, keep in mind that you cannot add books and media to your Nook Tablet while outside the US. The Kindle Fire allows international usage in over 100 countries.
And of course there are the points outlined above. Either way you choose, you’re going to get a small, fully capable device that is extremely entertaining. Enjoy!
